Some Features of Mobile Internet:

  • With more people using mobile phones to access the Internet, connecting with close and distant friends has become much easier. According to "Mobile Internet for Dummies," 3 billion people worldwide, including 200 million in the United States, use mobile Internet services, offering access to features beyond staying in touch with friends.

Practical

  • The convenience provided by mobile Internet has put more mobility into more hands. With this, users can perform many basic online tasks, such as checking email, updating blogs or social networking sites and checking sports scores.
With the small screen and lack of keyboard or mouse, some websites offer made-for-mobile websites which allow for easier navigation. Additionally, these sites contain smaller data size to compensate for the phone's smaller computing power.

Environmental

  • Ecological benefits are a lesser-known feature of using mobile Internet. According to cell phone company Nokia, a task such as updating a Facebook page uses nearly 100 times less energy with a mobile phone than a desktop computer.
The organization Climate Progress further notes that, according to current trends as of June 2010, mobile phone efficiency could continue doubling roughly every 18 months.

    Risks

    • Increased mobility for Internet users means more opportunity for criminals. Children, for example, might face more dangers when using mobile Internet, including less parental supervision when online and running up charges from accidental or irresponsible use.
Mobile Internet can also create a personal security risk if the user does online banking and sensitive communication with a mobile phone. Anyone who stole or found such a phone could potentially gain access to that information.
