AT&T/T-Mobile merger would be good for rural NC

The combination of the country’s second and fourth largest wireless carriers would violate antitrust law and “substantially lessen competition," according to a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department. But North Carolina state Sen. Tom Goolsby said he thinks the merger of AT&T and T-Mobile would be good for the Tar Heel state.

"Basically because of the ability of these companies to combine their resources and deliver 4G broadband internet to homes across America, particularly out in the areas in the hinterlands where folks don't currently have 4G. It is important that we be able to expand that," said Goolsby.

He said he would normally have a problem with two major corporations merging, but the industry is regulated. "Their prices are regulated, the delivery of services are regulated, their areas are regulated. If this were totally a free market thing, I absolutely could understand those concerns. It is the kind of thing that we have to watch. If we do have problems with it, then we need to roll it back and figure out something different."

Goolsby is from New Hanover County. Aside from Wilmington, the county is very rural and Goolsby believes rural areas would benefit greatly from a merger of AT&T and T-Mobile. If the FCC does reject the merger, AT&T can still appeal the decision, opening up a second trial in federal court.

Some Features of Mobile Internet:

  • With more people using mobile phones to access the Internet, connecting with close and distant friends has become much easier. According to "Mobile Internet for Dummies," 3 billion people worldwide, including 200 million in the United States, use mobile Internet services, offering access to features beyond staying in touch with friends.

Practical

  • The convenience provided by mobile Internet has put more mobility into more hands. With this, users can perform many basic online tasks, such as checking email, updating blogs or social networking sites and checking sports scores.
With the small screen and lack of keyboard or mouse, some websites offer made-for-mobile websites which allow for easier navigation. Additionally, these sites contain smaller data size to compensate for the phone's smaller computing power.

Environmental

  • Ecological benefits are a lesser-known feature of using mobile Internet. According to cell phone company Nokia, a task such as updating a Facebook page uses nearly 100 times less energy with a mobile phone than a desktop computer.
The organization Climate Progress further notes that, according to current trends as of June 2010, mobile phone efficiency could continue doubling roughly every 18 months.

    Risks

    • Increased mobility for Internet users means more opportunity for criminals. Children, for example, might face more dangers when using mobile Internet, including less parental supervision when online and running up charges from accidental or irresponsible use.
Mobile Internet can also create a personal security risk if the user does online banking and sensitive communication with a mobile phone. Anyone who stole or found such a phone could potentially gain access to that information.

Five Advantages Of Using Mobile Internet

That small thing we hold everyday, called a mobile phone, can be very powerful, even beyond our imagination. Decades ago, very few people could ever imagine having such functions in a “very small” equipment, nowadays we can get a lot of things from our mobile phone, which includes the ability to call our friends and family members anywhere they are in the world, the ability to send people text messages and most importantly the ability to access the internet from any corner of the world, in fact, our mobile phone is now a virtual world of its own.

1.0 Flexibility.
It is almost impossible to use your laptop in some places (such as sitting in a public vehicle) but there is hardly anywhere you can’t use your mobile phone. Once it has enough power and network availability you can easily use your mobile phone to access the internet. Your mobile phone also affords you pleasure because you can take any posture while using it, for example, you can access the internet on your mobile phone while lying on a chair or bed with your back or with any posture you like – this affords you comfort of the highest order and makes it easy for you to be more productive.

2.0 Speed.
Another major advantage of using a mobile internet is the speed it provides. A mobile phone has a lot of compression technologies with which it can turn a text and image heavy webpage to something very small and light before delivering it to your mobile browser, due to this particular technology mobile internet is even faster and you can easily get things done. An added advantage is that you can only open one tab at a time and there is no background program trying to use your internet connection; this saves bandwidth and also contributes to the overall speed of your internet connection.

3.0 Price.
An added advantage of using a mobile internet connection is that you often get it for a very cheap price and at times at no cost. Most mobile network providers include unlimited internet access and some other benefits with your mobile subscription and with this you might not need to pay additional fees before you can access the internet. If at all you will pay, you will be charged per kilobyte, not per minute and this means you will only be charged for what you use, this is a more effective method of charging and it will end up saving you money.

4.0 Coverage.
Using a mobile internet is also more realistic because a mobile network can be available everywhere, if at all you plan to travel to another country you can make use of your network provider’s roaming service to stay on your network while using the network service of the location you find yourself, this makes it certain for you to always have access to the internet because there is always coverage and network availability.

5.0 No Additional Requirement.
An additional reason to be using a mobile internet is because it doesn’t require any external equipment aside your mobile phone and your sim card. You don’t need to use a modem or a USB card or any other thing, you’re always sure to have access to the internet with only little efforts from your part. This means you have great portability and you can do things online without anybody knowing you’re doing it.
